With the Foundation of Modern Linguistics Series we will attempt to organize the kaleidoscopic present-day scene. If linguistics is no longer what it was ten years ago its relation to other disciplines has also changed. Language is peculiary human and it is found deep inside the mind. Consequently, the problem of modern linguistics are equally of concern to anthropology, sociology, physhology, and philosophy. Linguistics has always had a close affilition with literature and with foreign language learning. Developments in other areas have had their impact on linguistics. There are mathematical models of language and formalism of its structure. Computers are being used to test grammars. Others sophiscated instrumentation has revolutionized research in phonetics. Advances in neurology have contributed to our understanding of language pathologies and to the development of language. This series is also intended, then, to acquaint other disciplines with the progress going on in linguistics.
